INFLUENCE OF POOR FUNDING OF BUSINESS EDUCATION PROGRAMME ON STUDENTS’ SKILL ACQUISITION IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN SOUTH EAST NIGERIA

Abstract:
This study explores the impact of poor funding of business education programmes on students’ skill acquisition in tertiary institutions in South East Nigeria. Business education plays a vital role in equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the dynamic business environment. However, inadequate funding poses a significant challenge to the quality and effectiveness of these programmes, potentially hindering students’ skill development.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The qualitative phase involves interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, including students, faculty members, administrators, and policymakers. The quantitative phase utilizes structured questionnaires distributed to a representative sample of business education students across various tertiary institutions in the region.

The findings reveal that poor funding negatively affects the availability and quality of instructional materials, technological resources, and infrastructure necessary for effective skill acquisition. Insufficient financial resources limit the ability of institutions to attract and retain qualified faculty members, resulting in a shortage of skilled instructors. Additionally, limited funding hampers the organization of practical training, industrial visits, and internships, which are crucial for students to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios.

The study also identifies the adverse consequences of inadequate funding on students’ skill acquisition. Students reported lower levels of competency in areas such as entrepreneurship, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and financial literacy. Furthermore, the lack of exposure to modern business practices and technologies puts students at a disadvantage in the competitive job market.

To address these challenges, the study proposes several recommendations. First, increased funding allocation should be prioritized for business education programmes, ensuring the availability of up-to-date resources, modern technologies, and well-equipped facilities. Second, collaborations between educational institutions and industry should be fostered to provide students with practical experiences through internships, apprenticeships, and mentorship programs. Finally, policymakers should recognize the crucial role of business education in the economic development of the region and implement policies that support its growth and sustainability.

This research contributes to the existing literature by shedding light on the detrimental effects of poor funding on business education programmes in South East Nigeria. It provides valuable insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and stakeholders to understand the importance of adequate funding in promoting students’ skill acquisition and enhancing the overall quality of business education in the region.
